One of the research paper topics that students from Communication Studies 101 at Wilfrid Laurier University can choose to write about this semester is communication bubbles. Communication bubbles refer to the phenomenon of people becoming entrapped in ideological echo chambers as a result of only seeking out, or being fed, news that confirms their existing beliefs.
Lindsey Shepard is a Teaching Assistant for Communication Studies 101 at Wilfrid Laurier University, on November 1 she showed a portion of TVO’s “The Agenda” to her class. Jordan Peterson, a psychology professor at university of Toronto, was in the video arguing against being forced to use gender neutral pronouns.
On November 8, Shepherd was called into a meeting with two professors — Nathan Rambukkana and Herbert Pimlott — and a diversity and equity official with the university, Adria Joel, after a complaint was allegedly made about her tutorial. Shepherd recorded the meeting, where she was reprimanded for showing the video. Ramukkana said that it was impossible to neutrally present a position on gender pronouns; "This is like neutrally playing a speech by Hitler".
In a letter dated December 4, and sent to Shepherd's lawyer Howard Levitt, from the Laurier-hired lawyer Robert Centa, reads: "You asked for a copy of the complaint or complaints filed against your client. At this point in my investigation, I do not believe there is a document that contains a 'complaint' made about Ms. Shepherd nor is there anything I would describe as a formal complaint under any WLU policy," wrote Centa
After a recording of Shepherd's meeting was made public, both Laurier President Deborah MacLatchy and Rambukkana issued a public apology to her.
MacLatchy’s statement read “The conversation I heard does not reflect the values and practices to which Laurier aspires … I am sorry it occurred in the way that it did and I regret the impact it had on Lindsay Shepherd.”
Rambukkana also apologized for meeting with Shepherd in the company of two other colleagues, responding to criticism that such a set-up demonstrated a power imbalance.
Shepard, who sees herself as left wing, had thought about a career in academia but in an email to The Record she wrote "if this trend continues of radical leftist indoctrination, I'm not really interested in being a part of that,"

The fact that a licence and the licensing requirement for firearms owners is already in place is a precedent. All that this bill by my hon. colleague from Prince George—Peace River—Northern Rockies seeks to do is to keep law-abiding citizens from becoming arbitrary criminals because of bureaucratic delays.”
“I have a big news flash for everyone on the other side of the House: laws only pertain to law-abiding citizens. The more onerous we make the laws, and if we create laws that artificially make criminals out of people, we are not doing justice to anyone.”

“Updating information every 10 years is no different than providing the same information again in an application. It just avoids the rigamarole. It is not a complicated concept to figure out. We do it for a passports now. The precedent is set for government-issued IDs for 10 years to be valid. What is so complicated about that? Is it just the love of bureaucracy and creating jobs in the bureaucracy that the Liberals admire and adore so much?”
“It simplifies and streamlines a process. People have already been vetted and if their licences have been revoked in some way, they would know that, because 365 days a year, the RCMP, through the Canadian police information centre, and the CPIC database, would have verified and validated every Canadian firearms licence owner. If something was flagged through either a trial or court decision that someone's firearms licence should have been revoked or the person lost his or her privileges, the RCMP or the local police force would remove the licence from the individual and take he or she off. That is how someone who is in trouble is flagged, not by going through an application process all over again.”

“For example, many Canadians have the privilege of driving a car. We all accept that that this privilege comes with the responsibility of driving the cars responsibly, and of renewing licences to ensure that the driver continues to meet the eligibility requirements, including whether or not the driver still meets the eyesight requirements?”
“The licence renewal forms can be completed online, and the cost is $60 for five years. Does this sound too onerous a responsibility for maintaining and fulfilling the obligations of having the privilege of maintaining lawful firearms ownership? It does not to me.”
“We can all logically understand the principle behind license renewals. Circumstances change, and we can all understand that an individual might qualify for a firearms license at one point but in the future might not meet the requirements. Under the current regime the information collected every five years is critical to protecting the public. It is an invaluable tool for the chief firearms officers, who review the information to determine whether there are safety risks associated with allowing an individual continued lawful access to firearms.”
“I also would like to address a specific part of the renewal eligibility requirements that should be emphasized and viewed through a gender-based analysis. One aspect of licence renewal eligibility concerns the owner's role in domestic violence. The key part of the five-year licence information update is that current or former partners of an individual may be contacted about concerns regarding extending the privilege of that person to acquire a firearm and to continue with his or her licence.”
“I am proud that our government has adopted Canada's first gender-based violence strategy. Taking that into account, and the fact that women who leave an abusive spouse are at particular risk of violence, it seems reasonable to me that we have a system that allows for this factor to be reviewed every five years. I should add that domestic violence can be the basis for a licence to be revoked if an issue arises before the five-year renewal, but every five years, we have a chance to review.”

“I have to comment on my two hon. colleagues across the way. I respect them as members of Parliament. However, good Lord, when one does not understand a topic like this, one should not be speaking to it. It is very clear that neither of them does. There were comments in there that have nothing whatsoever to do with this bill. The mindset over there just baffles me.”
“Going back to my colleagues across the way, they both mentioned the fact that 10 years was too much and that public safety would go to hell in a handbasket. If we look at passports, we see they have to be renewed every 10 years. I know that the colleagues across the way support that. Public safety is involved in passport applications as well, because of illegal entry or otherwise, and that is accepted. However, when it comes to firearms owners, those scary, bad, firearms owners, it just blows me away. I really took exception to the last speaker when she basically said that we are at risk of firearms owners going out and shooting people. It just shows a clear lack of knowledge and understanding when it comes to this issue.”
“Essentially, when a firearms licence expires, the RCMP firearms program deems the person to be in possession of an illegal firearm.
I would like to cite the Criminal Code to demonstrate to the House just exactly what this could mean for a firearm owner with an expired licence. The Criminal Code says, “every person commits an offence who possesses a prohibited firearm, a restricted firearm or a non-restricted firearm without being the holder of (a) a licence under which the person may possess it”. In terms of punishment, the Criminal Code states that anyone in violation of the section above is “guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years; or (b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction”.
Five years for failing to renew on time. This is why there is so much angst among firearms owners when it comes to licensing. Under this system, the moment a licence is expired, firearms owners face the possibility of not only losing their property but facing up to five years in prison. The elimination of expiry would go a long way in creating a system that is respectful of firearms owners, which will in turn make firearms owners respectful of the system. It is truly a win-win situation.

Following an officer involved shooting in Winnipeg August 7 where Police say the officer had his sidearm in his holster on Aug. 7 when he opened the car door with one hand, holding his lunch in the other. As he sat down, the gun somehow went off, a bullet striking him in the lower leg. He suffered three severed arteries and as of late last week remained in hospital. Hey guys as always great show and entertainment, I am renewing my firearms licence and came across this to renew on line. I'm pretty sure you touched on this in a previous episode not too long ago... Shit apparently I cant drop a screen shot in this text box.... u should work on that.
It says on the RCMP's Website: "Who can use the online service to renew a licence.....
You CANNOT renew your firearms licence online if any of the following conditions apply to you:
- You are requesting a religious exemption from providing a photograph with your licence."
I'm sorry but how is this even an option at all for any application method? How can the RCMP who are all about public safety and protecting the public and crown allow this? I understand its apart of some peoples religion and they should have rights of some sorts but not when it comes to a mater of security and public safety should it? When is this going to stop? How far is it going to go? Is this not totally hypocritical? Sorry for the rant.
On another note I just listened to episode 91 (I'm behind this month) in regards to the discover Canada book to study from. I skimmed it online and thought I should have a "FREE" copy for myself also. there was some great tidbits on Canadian History, Politics, and other things that I found interesting and forgot about since I learned them in grade school or not at all. Thanks for the info on it.

This podcast is a great way to get through the rush hour drive in the GTA. You end up so triggered most of the time that the traffic won’t bother you at all. The banter is great and the topics/conversation are important to hear. As a scotch man I am inclined to recommend that but the strawberry daiquiris or wine seem like it would generate more “insightful” discourse. All the Best! Kyle

I have yet to find a study that does not show pregnancy rates decreasing over time in the US. There's similar studies for Canada and across the globe. Before you say that birth control and sex education has made pregnancy rates increase, do your research. You're spreading lies. If you have research that says otherwise, I'd love to see it.

the Supreme Court of Canada demanded it, as if people couldn't read the Supreme Court of Canada decision for themselves and discover no such requirement.
SECOND
It was Harper’s fault! As if people would forget that the Chretien and Martin governments were running the show when Khadr was captured and sent to Gitmo and when the two RCMP/CSIS interviews took place that caused the Supreme Court of Canada to decide Khadr's Charter rights were breached. As well it was Harper that repatriated Khadr in accordance with the Supreme Court of Canada suggested remedy.
THIRD
The total cost could have been up to 40 million so the 10.5 million settlement along with 5 million in legal fees was a tremendous savings for taxpayers. Coming from a guy who in a single fiscal year turned a 2 billion dollar surplus into a 23 billion dollar deficit in a non-recession, non-war year is astounding. To put this in context, it cost Canadians some 25 million to settle another Chretien mistake with Arar who was tortured and never convicted of any crimes. Or the 10 million spent trying to convict Duffy only to come up empty.
FOURTH
The morale argument made in Calgary on Saturday. Trudeau just committed all future governments of Canada to monetary remedies regardless of the requirements of Canadian courts. Trudeau has unilaterally decided that regardless of what remedy the Supreme Court of Canada decides on the government of Canada will have to pay a monetary remedy if a Charter right is breeched. He somehow seems to believe he's the moral compass of the country now and in the future.
