Background

Former Sun Media columnist and Sun News Network host Ezra Levant’s new online news site, The Rebel (therebel.media), has become one of Albertans’ top Internet sources of reporting and commentary in just its first year in operation.

In January when it was announcing the results of its royalty review, the NDP held a closed-door technical briefing where government experts explained the details to journalists.

When Rebel contributor Sheila Gunn Reid showed up for the briefing, she was turned away. The event was for “accredited media only.”

When Levant hired highly respected Edmonton media lawyer Fred Kozak to have the Rebel bans lifted, the NDP had Justice department lawyer, Jason Fung, provide a curt, one-sentence response: “Our client’s position remains that your client and those who identify as being connected to your client are not journalists and are not entitled to access media lock-ups or other such events.”

Implications

Freedom of the press

Canada’s 1982 constitution guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

Section 2b of the Charter explicitly states that we all have the right to “freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.”

“I’m not traditional media. I’m not mainstream media. But my personal politics aside, that doesn’t give the government a right to determine whether I’m legitimate or not.” Sheila Gunn Reid

The rise of the internet and alternative media

-fewer newspapers, fewer subscribers

-more people cutting cable service

-more people going to social media and online news outlets

Happy Flag Day!

On February 15, 1965 our national flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill. Canada was just two years away from centennial celebrations when the maple leaf flag was made official by Royal Proclamation. In 1996, February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day and has been observed every year since.

In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson formed a committee to resolve the issue, sparking a serious debate about a flag change to replace the Union Flag. Out of three choices, the maple leaf design by George Stanley, based on the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada, was selected.

What is the AR15?

  • ArmaLite Rifle model 15 is a lightweight, intermediate cartridge magazine-fed, air-cooled,  with a rotating lock bolt, actuated by a piston within the bolt carrier or by conventional long/short stroke piston operation
  • ArmaLite sold the design to Colt who own the AR15 trademark
  • The rifle was designed by Eugene Stoner, Jim Sullivan, Bob Fremont in 1957.
  • The AR15 was adapted to use the 5.56mm round, Stoner’s original design, the AR10, was designed to use the 7.62mm (308 Winchester) round.
  • Colt started selling the semi-automatic AR15 in 1963
  • M16 was introduced in the US Military in 1963 as a select fire 20” rifle with a fixed legth buttstock chambered in 5.56x45mm with a 20 round magazine.
  • M16 is in its 5th iteration the M16A4
  • M4 carbine variant has a collapsible stock and 14.5” barrel
  • M4 is in its second iteration in the M4A1, along with several variants
  • Canadian Armed Forces use the Colt Canda (Diemaco) C7 and C8 manufactured in Kitchener, ON.
  • C7 has been in service since 1984, C8 1994

Who can have an AR15?

  • Anyone with a valid RPAL

Why would you want and AR15?

  • hunting, but that's illegale
  • target shooting
    • Must be used at a Section 29 approved Range
  • sport shooting
    • Service Rifle
    • CQB
    • Precision Rifle
    • 3 Gun/Multi gun
    • IPSC Rifle
  • Very ergonomic, adjustable length of pull
  • Lots of options to replace handguards, stocks, pistol grips, sights/optics, and accessories
  • Easy to replace parts, Most items can be adjusted with a screwdriver or armours wrench. Some small parts may require punches or specialized tools.

Legal implications of ownership

  • All AR15s and variants are restricted by name though Orders In Council
  • Restricted firearms must be unloaded and either:
    • Made inoperable with a secure locking device (such as a trigger lock) and securely locked in a sturdy container, cabinet or room that cannot be easily broken into; or
    • Locked in a vault, safe or room that was built or adapted for storing these types of firearms
  • Transportation: Restricted and prohibited firearms must be: unloaded, made inoperable with a secure locking device, and locked in a sturdy container.
  • Magazine Capacity
    • Semi-Auto rifles are limited to 5 rounds
    • There are 10 round pistol magazines that work in the AR15 (LAR15)
    • 50 Beowulf magazines holt 5 rounds of 50 Beowulf, and also happen to hold about 15 rounds of 223.

Why are AR15s treated this way?

At one point they were non-restricted. They were also briefly prohibited.

They should be classed based on their technical characteristics;

Restricted:

  • has a barrel length under 470 millimetres (18.5 in)
  • can be fired when the overall length has been reduced by folding, telescoping, or other means to less than 660 millimetres (26 in)

Non-Restricted

  • has a barrel length over 470 millimetres (18.5 in)
  • can be fired when the overall length has been reduced by folding, telescoping, or other means to over 660 millimetres (26 in)

Types of AR15s

  • Rifle
  • Midlength
  • Carbine
  • Pistol
  • Large Frame/AR10

Common Calibers

  • 223 Remington or 5.56mm
  • 300 Blk
  • 7.62x39
  • 9mm

Less Common Calibers

  • 45 ACP
  • 6.5 Grendel
  • 6.8 SPC
  • .50 Beowulf
  • 50 BMG

Large Frame Caliber

  • 308 Winchester or 7.62x51mm

Common upgrades

  • quad rails or free float handguards
  • pistol grips
  • butt stocks
  • muzzle device

Hi Andrew
I am enjoying listening to your latest episode and l thought l might mention a little bit of firearm liscence history, that the RCMP omitted from there website.
Between 1995 and 1998 CFSC was one course. The study book contained both restricted and non-restricted material. When l challenged the test, handguns were apart of the test.
The Liberals had a meltdown when they discovered that they had unknowingly liscenced thousand of firearms owners for restricted status and quickly change the course and test into two seperate courses.
If the last digit on your firearms liscence is a four and hand guns were apart of your one CFSC and test, you are already liscenced for restricted firearms. Just pay the extra $20 on top of your $60 and check off restricted on your PAL renewal.
Many......older PAL holders are not aware of this fact. Keep up the good fight!
